I had been put out of work now for almost 5 years because of an injury.
- Since I did not obtain the injury while working, I was not compensated and ended up losing most of my possessions.
I had been living in a homeless shelter for a year now and it was not so bad, at least it was better than sleeping on the streets. The shelter provided warm food and a place to sleep even though it was not always warm. I had enough of spending nights while wearing all my clothes because it was too cold. I spoke to the administration to allow me to fix the central heating system in order to improve indoor comfort. Having been a HVAC professional I knew my way around the electric heating system. I did the furnace/heater repair on the hydronic heating system that had long since died. While performing a furnace/heater service, I discovered a clogged furnace filter which explains why the central air conditioning unit had stopped working. The administration, though they did not have a lot of spending money, was very supportive and bought the shelter a few pieces of heating and cooling equipment needed to repair the HVAC unit. I took my time working on the system as I had to improvise as the unit was old and some parts were not available at the heating business, the heating industry had grown tremendously and most of the machines were now outdated. I also managed to seal up the cracks that were on the gas heater. We could now control the temperature from anywhere within the shelter with the wireless thermostat. After 3 days, we were all glad to be in a warm bed and warm building. Most comfortable were the women with toddlers and infants.
