I know that I am not a minimalist kind of person.
When other people talk about getting rid of all of their belongings I don’t understand how they can live that way.
It’s not that I want to collect a bunch of gadgets and assorted luxuries, so much as I am too sentimental to throw away random knick knacks and meaningful belongings. Sometimes, I can’t fathom the idea of parting ways with something that other people would consider useless junk. This is absolutely the case when it comes to my portable air conditioning system. Admittedly, I bought this AC unit at least 15 years ago. At the time when I needed to purchase the cooling system I was attending college and living in a particularly terrible apartment building. The apartment didn’t have any central air conditioning so it was always blistering hot. Every summer day felt like living in hell when you didn’t have the power of a cooling system at your fingertips. Eventually, I got tired of sweating through the sheets every night without any cooling system so I got online and purchased a portable AC unit. The air conditioning device was never particularly powerful or effective, but the cooling power it offered was better than nothing. For the past 15 years I have been unable to part ways with this air conditioning device. I know that it barely works at this point and probably wouldn’t provide an iota of cool air if I plugged it in. However, the AC unit reminds me of my early college experiences and my first attempt at living alone. I’m too sentimental to get rid of the crusty old AC system, even if it’s a useless eyesore.
