As a journalist, I was used to having sit-downs with the C-suites of the business world.
I was a career journalist and loved knowing more about powerful women in society.
I had been researching the vast world of a/cs and warming equipment, and so I settled on this woman who had single-handedly built a company that had gone ahead to become the biggest company in the state. She had received tons of awards for her heating business. I was having breakfast with a HVAC professional who had a multi-billion dollar company. I started by asking her personal questions so she could explain her starting point. She had started by selling simple heating and cooling equipment such as the wireless thermostat before proceeding to supply the HVAC unit as well as a hydronic heating unit. The heating industry is a male-dominated market but my interviewee managed to develop a thick skin. As the enterprise grew so did her workforce. She employed technicians who were responsible for furnace/heater service as well as furnace/heater repair. She also trained them on how to check and replace the furnace filter and install the central heating systems. At some point, she became bankrupt but was still able to pull herself up from her bootstraps and go at it again. She now stocked major units such as the central air conditioning system as well as the electric heating system. As we were speaking, my gas heater cranked and completely shut off. It took her only 10 minutes to revive it. Guess that is why she was the expert. The interview went really well and my editor was also glad to meet this phenomenal woman.
