A little over ten years ago, I was given an emergency HVAC repair job at an apartment building that was two blocks from my house.
- I didn’t mind getting out of bed and doing furnace repairs, but I hated how upset the people were.
When I got to the apartment building, I had to find the right apartment. I knocked on the door, and a young woman answered. From the moment I looked at her, wrapped in a hoodie, fuzzy slippers and mittens, I couldn’t stop smiling. She showed me to her HVAC unit and told me it was out when she got home from school. She didn’t want to call because she didn’t want to pay for after hours services. Along with fixing her HVAC system, we began talking. I couldn’t believe it when three hours later, we were still talking, even though it took less than an hour to fix the HVAC. Last week, I made travel arrangements to take her on a two-week cruise. I think it’s a great way to celebrate our tenth anniversary. I can still hear her telling me how cute she thought I looked in my HVAC uniform. I laughed and told her she should look at more than my butt. I’m having a hard time realizing we’ll be married ten years now and she still thinks I look good in my uniform. It’s hard to believe that if I hadn’t picked up on the HVAC emergency call that night, I may not have ever met her. Becoming an HVAC tech ended up being more than just a job, it made me a husband.
