I was worried when my hedgehog needed surgery! The exotic vet warned me that small creatures don’t consistently do well under anesthesia.
They’re just too delicate.
I decided to go ahead with it anyway, then either the hedgehog would have to have the surgery or she would have to be euthanized. They’re just weren’t any other options. I was ecstatic when she pulled through the anesthesia but I did not get to take her lake house for three more days. Then, as soon as she got lake house she started acting kind of strange. The normally reclusive hedgehog was laying out flat in her cage as though she was trying to cool herself down. I moved her cage next to the air conditioner vent and then every one of us turned the air conditioner up for her; Somewhere around 71°, the hedgehog finally started looking comfortable again. I had to put on a sweatshirt and I felt kind of odd walking around the house in a sweatshirt in the middle of the summer. I love to keep the temperature control at around 70 degrees and that temperature is usually just unbelievable for me and the hedgehog. That temperature is also unbelievable for my electric bill! However, I did not mind turning the air conditioner down for a few days so that the hedgehog could feel better. She did get better too. It took almost a month but now she is completely back to being her normal hedgehog self, and you would not guess anything happened at all unless you looked for the scars; My temperature control is back to normal as well; 70 degrees and comfortable.
