I have heard horror stories from people who forgot to change the air filters in their air conditioners.
- They complain that whenever they turned their air conditioners on, they immediately begin to get sick.
They won’t realize what it is at first, but eventually, they will begin to suspect that their HVAC unit has something to do with it. When they think to check their air conditioner, they remember that they haven’t changed their air filter in a while. When they pull the air filter out of their air conditioner, it is covered in mildew and slime. However, this was not my experience. I change my air filter pretty often, but this was the first time that I had forgotten. The air conditioner didn’t make me sick or anything, but there were subtle signs that something wasn’t right. My air conditioner was set to the coldest temperature, but it wasn’t blowing as strongly as it had in the past. When I listened to it closely, it would make slight whistling sounds that made me think that my air conditioner was being restrained from blowing as hard as possible. I check the air filter in my air conditioner, and sure enough, it was a little dirty. I had a replacement on hand, and I quickly replaced it and turned my air conditioner back on. No harm, no foul. When you inspect and clean your air conditioners as much as I do, you realize that you prevent major HVAC problems that most people experience. The next time your air conditioner stops working, check the air filter.
