My daughter Cassie called me in a panic because her HVAC unit malfunctioned in her home and her technician told her that she needs to have the unit replaced.
My daughter lives in an older house that my husband and I purchased for her a few years ago.
It was perfect because after she graduated from college and got her job, she was able to handle the mortgage payments on her own. Over the years, she had some minor maintenance issues, but nothing major that she couldn’t handle. But a broken HVAC unit is one of the most expensive things to repair in your home. The cost of a new HVAC system usually runs between $5,000 and $10,000. This depends on the size of the unit, the square footage of the home, and the efficiency rating for the HVAC system. Luckily, Cassie’s house isn’t that big, she lives in a 1,200 square foot 2-bedroom home. This means, the cost of her new HVAC unit should be on the lower side of the cost spectrum. She lives alone in her home, and I am wondering if she would consider getting a window unit for now until we can figure out how to cover the cost of the new HVAC system. I am sure her dad will offer to help with the cost, but Cassie is going to insist on paying him back. As a temporary solution, I will ask her to consider installing a window air conditioner in her bedroom and possibly installing ceiling fans in the other spaces. This will give Cassie some time to determine the best option for getting the new HVAC unit.
