It amazes me how there are some people who grasp on to some of the most ridiculous things as well as simply won’t let go.
It feels as though frustration as well as anger permeates our society nowadays.
Everyone is looking for someone to blame for perceived slights as well as injustice. And, boy can those scapegoats get very strange. The new debate about the global environment is a good example. There are factions who are on either extremes of the heated debate. And wow, do they ever cling to their positions. How interesting would it be if the bunch of us could absolutely work together for a change. There is so much energy wasted by simply occupying extreme positions. Then there is my mother. She is so angry about the R 22 Freon ban which is not so far away. She has an old heat pump she has nursed along for roughly 20 years. And she is most particular that this heat pump will run until the end of time if she keeps using it. Doesn’t seem to matter to her in the least that she is paying through the nose on utilities. She instead is convinced there is a government conspiracy aimed at taking away her R 22 refrigerant. I’ve attempted to explain how freon affects our ozone layer. The two of us even went online to read the studies about what hydrochlorofluorocarbons do to wreck the only thing that keeps us from being burnt by the sun. Mother wants nothing to do with any of it. I tried to frame the argument a little differently. I asked her how she would feel about having her grandchildren live underground because the ozone layer was completely depleted. This caught her attention. She is still convinced that all the lefty greenies were out to get her though. But perhaps upgrading the ancient heat pump wouldn’t be such a bad thing. It was for the adolescents after all.
