The importance of general knowledge about heating

Living this close to the arctic circle means that you have to know how to take care of yourself. Anything that you need, you will probably have to make yourself. Anything that breaks, you will probably have to fix it yourself. Being so survival-oriented means that the people around here — although they are few and far between — are extremely friendly and helpful. We all look out for each other however we can. A few years ago I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks with a certified HVAC technician, who taught me a lot of skills I have been using to help others. Of course, most people use fire for heating, because it’s still the best means of keeping yourself alive. Firewood or clean burning oil can keep the heating going for a long time, but it’s not the old times any more, and many people have upgraded to safer, more modern heating devices. The benefit of the space heater over an open fire is that it isn’t going to accidentally burn down your house. A space heater also requires electricity, and sometimes will need repair which require electrical expertise. My HVAC tech friend showed me the ins and outs of several different heating systems, just so that I would be familiar with all the main components. He was wise enough to not teach me how to fix a problem, but to give me an overview of the HVAC systems and how they functioned. Since then I have passed that wisdom on, and helped a lot of people learn about their heating systems.
