However next, check for holes in the flue that could cause carbon monoxide leaks, and patch any hole with foil tape, but replace any corroded flue. Replace oil filters by first closing the oil valve. Remove the old filter and replace it with a new one. Check and change your air filter if it is dirty, then the unit’s blower moves heated air from the furnace through ducts to room vents. Therefore, you need to check the blower’s belt for looseness and any wear and tear. A loose belt will slow the blower’s ability to work effectively, then adjust a deflected belt by sliding the motor slightly backwards slowly. Calculate the furnace efficiency using a basic combustion analyzer. The combustion analyzer measures gasses in the exhaust flue. Adjust the burner air gates for the respected ratio of fuel to air. This adjustment allows the fuel to burn completely before it goes up the chimney. Replace the oil nozzle, which atomizes the fuel right before it finally ignites. Check the shape and the flame color at the ignitor to see if there is complete oil combustion. Lastly, scrub the floor vents by removing and vacuuming out the air ducts.
