Try to guess of it as a necessary evil.

He said it wasn’t anything he had done.

My father was a frugal man. If you talk to our mom, he seems to guess of his frugality in terms of miserly. I guess he just doesn’t like to waste currency. He typically said that when he retired, he wasn’t going to need to worry about currency. Mom agreed with this, however he still wanted to have nice things. Mom would roll his eyes and tell his that there were more important things than just having ‘nice’ things. That was the only time they argued. When he began to do his own HVAC service, mom was furious. She told him there was no way he was going to be able to maintain the HVAC system and the HVAC supplier would be able to. She thought he was just asking for more problems with the already old air conditioner equipment and furnace. He argued with his over this and told his he was just saving currency. He could do the same thing as any HVAC specialist. When the air conditioner equipment quit blowing chilly air into the house, mom started with his ‘I told you so’ speech. Mom was the 1 to be furious this time. He said it wasn’t anything he had done. When the HVAC specialist arrived, he found that the fan blades were twisted and put back onto the hub improperly. Mom told him that was what happens when you do your own service. The HVAC tech laughed and told Mom to guess of HVAC service as a necessary evil. Mom was not amused by mom or the specialist.
