Unnecessary furnace repair

I felt really stupid last week.

  • Let me preface by saying that we moved into a new house about 6 months ago.

Things were going great; there were a few repairs needed but no much. Then, last week, the furnace completely stopped working. It simply would not turn on at all. My wife and I pulled a few space heaters out of storage and then we called up a heater repair company. Because of the sudden drop in temperature, the company could not come out for 2 whole days. Needless to say, by the time they arrived, we were both getting tired of living without heat. That is what makes this so funny. The technician simply took our thermostat off of the wall, replaced batteries in the back of it, and the furnace kicked right on. I didn’t even know that our thermostat had batteries. I thought it was hooked up to the wiring in the wall like in our old house. I ended up having to pay $70 just to have a heater repairman come to my house and replace the batteries in my thermostat. That is something we definitely could have done ourselves. Well at least now we know. I can’t help but laugh about it. I am just grateful that the furnace is working again, we can put away our space heaters, and there was not something seriously wrong with the furnace. I suppose it will take us a few years to learn all of the ins and outs of this house. I just hope we don’t pay for any other unnecessary repairs in the meantime.
