People take their vacations at various times of the year. Summer is popular for vacations since that is the season when most people get time off from work and school. Vacation spots are also supposed to be at their best during summer. A few vacationers I know, have earned the name “snowbirds”, based on their habit of flying to warmer climes, as soon as the weather in their vicinity begins to get cold. These winter travellers vacation during winter, since anywhere they go is likely to be warmer than where they live!
Last winter, two “snow bird” friends of mine scheduled their usual trip to the Caribbean. Swapping furnaces and fireplaces for sunshine and air conditioning, was the best, they claimed. As usual, they booked their airfares way ahead of time, on an airline with guaranteed perfect HVAC air quality. The flight was all they had wished for. When they landed, however, they got a very unpleasant surprise. The HVAC system at the airport was broken, so it was like emerging from wonderful air conditioning on the plane, into an unbearably hot, sweaty, atmosphere.
After quickly making their way to their hotel, my friends were finally able to relax. As on the plane, the hotel HVAC was working perfectly. That is, until two days later when a freak storm blew over the island and totally messed up the electrical lines. The hotel did have a backup generator but it was hardly up to supplying that multi-roomed hotel with adequate air conditioning. The “snowbirds” cut their holiday short and flew back into the cold in a matter of days.
Sometimes you just can’t win.
